"I have been a satisfied user of Hostmonster since 2006, and I have received very good service with this company. I currently maintain three websites hosted with them. I started with Hostmonster after initially suffering with an unbelievably poor hosting company, and Hostmonster's 24/7 support was the primary reason why I decided to host with them. I rarely call tech support, but when I have, they have always been there, which is generally in the evening on Sundays. Both tech support and customer service people have been knowledgeable and friendly to me. I can say that I've rarely noticed any down-time, however, the websites I publish are lower maintenance (about once a week). In a very competitive field, Hostmonster may not be the absolute lowest priced hosting company, but I have, and will continue to recommend Hostmonster to anyone searching for a quality hosting company."
"I host multiple sites for clients and myself. It is important to me to make sure I use a hosting company that can address any issues I may have regarding the server. I have called at 4pm, 1am, and 6am for tech support and each time I get a friendly staff member who can fix my issues quickly. The other day I purchased a secure certificate for a site that has just expired, and with in 5 minutes my site was running SSL. I have been very impressed since I have started using them, and will recommend them to any developer/client I ever come in contact with who needs a hosting company."
"Hostmonster does everything but write your page for you, but I asked for help when I would get stumped and they were a pretty good help "
"Horrible service. I hosted 5 websites through Hostmonster total. All had random downtime, despite their 99.99 uptime claims. Constantly had issues with users downloading files that I was serving from the account, they would randomly loose connection to the server, hostmonster claimed it was not their fault, then when I demonstrated the issue over multiple ISP and computers, they said it was because I didnt have a dedicated IP for my account and that was causing timeouts which is a load of crap. They have canceled my service 3 times now in the past 5 months, first time because they claimed a php web page was causing almost a meg of IO traffic (its a simple web page, nothing on it or running, they didnt know what they were talking about) but shut my service off without ANY warning what so ever. Second and third times they shut it off due to my businesses files that were up there for download, claiming copyright and storage violations. Its my copyright! Beware of this host!"
"bad service. no antivirus program in server. malware hack to the site they blame account owner and then suspend account without any notice. please dont choose this hosting company. from No.2 web hosting company now drop to no.10. i believe Hostmonster will continue drop rank because of their attitude and customer care. "
"Many of the features you'd expect from a quality host, tons of space, CPanel, etc... However, the frequent database outages caused alot of issues and overall was just unbearable to deal with. Cannot recommend them based on this."
For all but the most insanely high-traffic apps, the best Ruby on Rails hosting solution these days is a combination of Amazon Web Services, Heroku, and a shared host like DreamHost.
This is because you should serve all your static assets from CloudFront and use SES for outgoing email. Your application layer should sit on Heroku (until it becomes crazy expensive), and your inbound email server, domain redirects, and miscellaneous stuff should be on a shared host.
