"I'm not really in the business of promoting Web sites, but here are two companies whose services I'm currently using, and they are definitely worth recommending. The first is ThinkHost Web Hosting. There are a number of services this company provides that are unique and even inventive. For example, most of their software is Open Source, under the General Public License, which allows ThinkHost's programmers to read, redistribute, and customize their software to meet the needs of the clients. Their servers run the current version of the FreeBSD operating system, along with other Open Source applications like Apache, PHP, and MySQL. A variety of new modules and options can be customized for these apps, and if there's a module your site needs installed, the ThinkHost developers are usually happy to oblige. Just let them know! The company's approach to hardware is unique as well. Instead of constantly acquiring additional servers - which would prevent the quick application of software updates and security patches - ThinkHost technicians simply upgrade and expand a very small server farm of custom-configured servers, as client needs demand. As a result, Your site will never be slowed down by other sites on the same machine, or by any one site taking up too much bandwidth. The memory and disk space capacities of their servers - as well as other processes - are automatically monitored around the clock, and expanded as the need arises. As a result, since May 2000, ThinkHost servers have maintained 99.99% uptime overall. Their 24/7 Email support is excellent. All trouble tickets are answered in the order they are received, with emergency issues given precedence. Many tickets are answered in a few minutes and most within 6 hours, but always within 24 hours. Because ThinkHost's software is continuously upgraded, the utmost security and reliability can be maintained"
"I'm very happy with the level of service ThinkHost provides. I'm basically a beginner and they helped my through all my hurdles. I love that they're a "Green" host as well."
"Thinkhost is not a good webhosting company – they are not reliable and won’t return your money once you figured out that their service is not good."
"Deciding to switch to green hosting I fell for the Thinkhost pitch and signed on for three years. Boy was I sorry I did. I really wanted to be happy about my decision but from the beginning this service was not good. I tried to pretend it was OK but eventually my employees and customers forced me to admit that my web presence just sucked. Load times were long and all too often my site and mail server would go offline for 5 – 20 minute periods. A difficult issue to press with customer service as “well it’s on now” was the end of them looking for a problem. The only reason I rated them above horrible is that they were polite about it while they wasted my time. I lost $150 to switch service as there was no refund from Thinkhost. Guess why.. and spend your money elsewhere."
"STAY AWAY FROM THINKHOST!!!!! THEY WILL RIP YOU OFF!!!! Boy, how I wish I had read some of the reviews for Thinkhost out there before being ripped off… I wanted a socially responsible, green company to host my sites and found Thinkhost. I signed up for an account and quickly realized it was not a good company when their admin panel turned out to be so unfriendly. I couldn’t even set up a database without submitting a ticket for tech support! And their support email is “firstname.lastname@example.org,” so you know what that means… I immediately requested a cancellation and they never sent me an email acknowledging the cancellation to the email address I had posted as my email address. When I finally contacted them through their email form (they do not have a phone number on their web site), they claimed they would not refund charges because they sent me an email in their “internal email system” with the cancellation form I needed to fill out, and that it was past their money-back trial period. I had signed up for a whole year! Of course, this is an email I would never get unless I went looking for it somewhere in the hostingoperations.com support site… Of course, I do get their newsletters to the email address supposedly in their “internal system.” Stay away from Thinkhost! They are not socially responsible, and they will rip you off. I am not the only one they’ve done this to. I find more and more bad reviews about them. They always have an excuse not to refund charges. I am fighting this through my credit card service."
For all but the most insanely high-traffic apps, the best Ruby on Rails hosting solution these days is a combination of Amazon Web Services, Heroku, and a shared host like DreamHost.
This is because you should serve all your static assets from CloudFront and use SES for outgoing email. Your application layer should sit on Heroku (until it becomes crazy expensive), and your inbound email server, domain redirects, and miscellaneous stuff should be on a shared host.
